TOP SURF SPOTS IN BREVARD COUNTY

Brevard county is known for its fabulous surfing along our beautiful ocean coast. And as every surfer knows some surf spots are better than others.

Here’s a list of some of the favorite local spots known for their good waves and maybe some hang ten time!

2nd Light

A popular beach named due to it being the 2nd stoplight across from an entrance to Patrick Air Force Base, “2nd light” is favored by many of the military personnel stationed there and locals alike.  At sunset, the sound of “Retreat” can be heard, a tradition at American military bases to signify the end of the day and for soldiers and airmen to return to their quarters.  Each and every night this can be heard from the beach while you soak in the last rays of sunlight.  One can witness a crowd standing in silence with their hands over their hearts facing toward Patrick air force base when the bugle is played each day marking the lowering of the American Flag.  It happens to be popular amongst surfers due to the long stretches of beach break and the occasional sandbars that are offshore.

16th Street

You know that you are at 16th street due to the free parking and abundance of surf stickers tagging the garbage cans and signs.  A very popular surf spot amongst the locals, 16th street is also a “go to” place to visit.  It has an outside shower to wash the sand off of your surfboard and also a bathroom with a drinking fountain.  The further south you go the bigger the waves become, if it’s not rideable at the Pier it’s more likely to be here.

Hangars Beach

Near the 2nd light across from Patrick Air Force Base, Hangars tend to be surfed at a more intermittent level.  The Air Force once had a pier here which was removed though many of the concrete blocks under the waterline remain.  These underwater structures help the surf to break from further out, though can be treacherous if you wipe out into them due to the abundance of barnacles growing on their surface.  If you are experienced, check it out, if it’s your first lesson on a longboard do yourself a favor and go elsewhere…you’ll appreciate the lack of cuts and bruises.

Sebastian Inlet

Occasionally surfers can enjoy the south side of the Inlet, however, it’s the north side next to the jetty seems to be the go-to surf spot for locals. It is known for the swells that bounce off the jetty.  This spot is more appropriate for intermediate surfers due to a fierce observance of surfer etiquette.  If the waves are not pumping in Cocoa Beach or Indialantic there is a good chance that they are at Sebastian Inlet.

Cocoa Beach Pier

Regular place for surfers and competitions.  If the waves are pumping there are surfers here… guaranteed.  Where Kelly Slater got his start.  Get a drink at one of the restaurants above or paddle out near the pilings for easier access to the outside and then catch a wave in.

Downtown Cocoa Beach

This stretch-line of beach break is where the various schools of surf and summertime surf camps hang out.  There are sandbars 100 yards out which you can paddle to and then be in knee to waist-high water.  Stand up here and when a wave comes grab it ride it to the beach and repeat.  On nice days it can be crowded at the line-up due to the amateur level surfers going on up to the professional level.  Localism does not exist in the surf lineup here but please use proper surfer etiquette while enjoying this wave.
